Phonics Phones

Phonics phones serve as devices for students to hear themselves as they read and speak.  Students are able to focus on sounds and speak softly.  Phonics phones can enhance reading skills like fluency.

My students really enjoy using phonics phones.  They have the opportunity to listen closely to letter sounds, word  beginnings and endings and pronunciation.
We use phonics phone in our centers.  We read the room, read a book or talk to a friend with a phonics phone.

Sight Word Activities for Emergent Readers

High frequency or sight words appear often in text and are words that are useful to emergent readers. Knowing words that appear over and over help students to become fluent readers and writers.  These words can eventually be used to build new words.

Help students with known or almost known sight words by focusing on featured sight words in charts, text and Fluency Sentence Strips.

  Fluency Sentence Strips

Literacy centers, or games like Bingo, that draw emergent readers to words are helpful in the beginning stages of  literacy learning.
 Sight Word Bingo

Emergent books build confidence in early readers.  Students will be able to read emergent-reader texts with purpose and understanding.

Book of the Month

To kick off our Book of the Month, I have selected Kids Who Pray for the U.S.A.
I think it is the perfect book for young children in America right now.  We are at a time where we need to show love to one another no matter what we look like or where we come from.  This book is the perfect way for children to demonstrate and express their faith through journal writing, activities and daily prayer.  It also includes fun facts about the United States.

Segment Sounds to Make Words

Segment sounds and make words.  Students isolate and pronounce the initial, medial vowel, and final sounds (phonemes) in three-phoneme (consonant-vowel-consonant, or CVC) words.  Spell out the word using bottle tops.

Make Learning Last: How Diverse Learners Can Process Their Understanding: Quick reflections, surveys, and diverse perspective assessments can stabilize your instructional framework by giving students a chance for the epiphanies so critical to their learning.

Graphing Sight Words

Here is another way to help master those sight words. Read it- Graph it!

Rhyming

Use this puzzle in your literacy centers to build phonological awareness.  Students recognize and match rhyming pairs.  Cards measure approx. 3.5" x 4".

Reading Partners and Fluency Practice

Students read a book to a partner.

Children practice reading the book several times until they can read it with ease.

Reread the book together.  Partners alternate reading the pages.  Children try to read as if they are talking to a friend.

Read the book chorally.

Word Family Board

I created this "Word Family Board" for students to use as a center to reinforce and strengthen skills.  Each week I add a new word family for students to explore.  Students work independently or in small groups.  The board includes:
  • a word family poem
  • word family chart
  • word slides
  • pocket for a word family puzzle
  • worksheets (cut and paste)
  • Material comes from http://www.carlscorner.us.com/WordWay.htm.

I added labels, made pockets and used sheet protectors for easy transition.   The board was purchased at Dollar Tree.   Perfect if you have limited space in your class.
Very inexpensive, quick and easy to make, and it is an effective center.

Building a Sentence in the Block Center

Use masking tape to write words (and punctuation marks).  Then stick the tape on the blocks (include all parts of speech). Students will have fun creating complete sentences, applying punctuation and using literacy skills while building and playing with blocks. Modify with letters or sight words.

Sorting Leaves

Red, Yellow, Green, Orange...

We went on a leaf hunt.  Students collected colorful leaves from around our school.  We brought them back to class and sorted the leaves by color on chart paper.
